Semaglutide is an antidiabetic medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and an anti-obesity medication used for long-term weight management. It is a peptide similar to the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), modified with a side chain. It can be administered by subcutaneous injection or taken orally.

Semaglutide injection (Wegovy) is used along with an individualized low-calorie, low-fat diet and exercise program to help with weight loss in obese adults or overweight adults who may also have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. The mechanisms through which semaglutide delivers its benefits in lowering blood glucose levels and promoting weight loss involve the activation of GLP-1 receptors primarily located in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and brain.
